The Craftsman Restaurant & Bar serves New
American cuisine in a restored Arts and Crafts environment.
The History
The Craftsman building has been a Public House since 1942 when
it opened as "The Sippi Bar". As Lake Street changed
through the years, so did the businesses that served the locals.
One thing that didn’t change — 43rd and Lake Street
has always been a popular corner to feed Twin Citians. It is in
this tradition that The Craftsman follows.
In 1985 Mike Dooley and Susan Kennedy-Dooley purchased the property
and started Molly Quinn’s Pub. In 1998 The Dooley’s
sold Molly Quinn’s and the pub relocated further down Lake
Street in 2003. In 2004 the building and grounds went through
a substantial makeover which involved enlarging the premises and
rehabbing the existing structure. The Craftsman Restaurant &
Bar opened in December of 2004 under the ownership of the Dooley’s.
Chef Mike Phillips
Chef Phillips is an Iowa native who moved to the Twin Cities
in 1985 to attend Hamiline College. After traveling and eating in other parts of the world, Mike started cooking in area restaurants such as the Modern Cafe and the Walker Art Center. He and his wife Michelle opened and ran Chet's Taverna, a popular neighborhood restaurant that was committed to working with regional and organic ingredients. After operating Chet's for 6 years, Mike closed Chet's in 2004. His interest in sustainable living, organic quality, and European cooking techniques are an integral part of The Craftsman.
